The Seasonal Planting Calendar

Know exactly what to plant, prune, and prepare in every season. Your garden changes through the year — here's how to stay ahead.

Spring

  • Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost
  • Prepare beds with compost and amendments
  • Plant cool-season crops: peas, lettuce, spinach
  • Prune fruit trees and summer-blooming shrubs
  • Divide overgrown perennials

Summer

  • Water deeply and consistently — mulch to retain moisture
  • Deadhead flowers to extend blooming
  • Harvest vegetables regularly to encourage production
  • Plant successional sowings of herbs and salads
  • Stake tall plants before they flop

Autumn

  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs: tulips, daffodils, alliums
  • Clean up diseased foliage — leave healthy debris for wildlife
  • Top-dress beds with compost and mulch
  • Plant trees and shrubs while soil is still warm
  • Bring tender plants indoors before frost

Winter

  • Plan next year's garden — sketch and order seeds
  • Protect vulnerable plants with mulch or burlap
  • Service and sharpen tools
  • Force paperwhite bulbs indoors for winter cheer
  • Start onion and leek seeds late winter
