Hidden Gem: Huawei K2V3 Quad-Core Chipset

Just this week, I blogged about the Huawei Honor 2 Android phone which came with the K2V3 Chipset with quad-core processors. A quick research revealed that it is actually a pretty good performer amongst the quad-core chipset (with the exception of the Mediatek 6577 which is dual-core):

I was curious what this interesting chipset was all about, so I went on a quick search for details of this value/budget chipset. And here are the details of the HiSilicon Hi3620 Application Processor:

Huawei K3V2 HiSilicon Hi3620 RISC Multi-core Application Processor

Additional Details

Special Features: 4x ARM Cortex-A9 Superscalar processor core (1200 MHz), 500MHz 64-bit LP DDR2 SDRAM interface, 16-core Vivante GC4000 GPU, 1080p30 video encode, 1080p60 video decode

Now, the Vivante GC4000 GPU is a product that is stated to be a “product proven and best in class performance ranging from the smallest to the highest performance synthesizable GPUs support for a wide range of graphics and GPGPU APIs. These APIs includeOpenCL EP 1.1, OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 and Halti extensions, OpenGL 3.0/2.1,DirectX 11 and OpenVG 1.1. The following table briefly describe the GPU Gc4000. How the 16-core is achieved, I am not sure, but there are 2 compute core with 8 vec-4 and 32 vec-1 cores as stated. Maybe Huawei had made special adjustments in the Honor 2.

GC4000 Series
Clock Speed MHz 600 – 800
Compute Cores 2
Shader Cores 8 (Vec-4)
32 (Vec-1)
Shader GFLOPS 44–60 (High)
88–120 (Medium)
GPGPU Options Embedded / Full Profile
Cache Coherent Yes

In any case, this is one chipset that Huawei may have a chance to break into the budget / value market, currently also populated by MediaTek’s 6589 processor.
